What this course is about

This first of two-course series is based on Dr. Heiser's book, The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatrual Worldview of the Bible. Dr. Heiser takes an in-depth and behind the scenes look at Chapters 1 through 22 and uncovers what the Bible really says about the supernatural unseen world, starting with the Old Testament. You will journey into the ancient world of the Old Testament and learn about the historical and cultural milieus of the Bible's original authors and audiences. Special attention is given to the following concepts:

  • Cosmic geography
  • Divine council
  • Imaging God
  • Sacred space
  • Supernatural rebellions
  • Believing loyalty

What you will learn

After completing this course, you should be able to explain:

  • The concepts of the cosmis geography, divine council, imaging God, sacred space, and believing loyalty.
  • God's vision for a supernatural and natural family on earth.
  • Supernatural evil and rebellions from the perspective of the ancient biblical writers.
  • How the doctrine of salvation is consistent between the Old and New Testaments.
How this course is taught

This course is completely online and self-paced. It consists of 15 modules that are structured as follows:

Dr. Michael S. Heiser (who prefers to be called Mike) is a scholar of the Bible and its ancient context. He earned master’s degrees in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania and Hebrew Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has a PhD in Hebrew and Semitic Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Before teaching at AWKNG School of Theology, Dr. Heiser taught at the university level for over 20 years and was the Academic Editor and Scholar for Logos Bible Software for 15 years. He supervised scholarly data projects related to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hebrew and Semitic inscriptions, the Septuagint, and the Greek Pseudepigrapha.

Dr. Heiser is published widely in scholarly academic journals, including the Bible Study Magazine, and authored several portions of the Faithlife Study Bible. In addition, he is the author of several best-selling books, most notably:

  • Supernatural: What the Bible Teaches about the Unseen World and Why It Matters
  • Angels: What the Bible Really Says About God’s Heavenly Host
  • Demons: What the Bible Really Says About the Powers of Darkness

Dr. Heiser has a wide online presence through his blog, podcast, and YouTube channels, all of which can be found on his website. Dr. Heiser also has a nonprofit ministry MIQLAT, which provides free translations of his books Supernatural: What the Bible Teaches about the Unseen World and Why It Matters and What Does God Want? in dozens of languages.

On a personal note, Dr. Heiser has been married for more than thirty years to his incredible wife, Drenna. They have four adult children. He enjoys pop culture science fiction and has published two science fiction novels The Facade Sage (Volume 1 and 2) and The World Turned Upside Down: Finding the Gospel in Stranger Things. He loves dogs (especially pugs), enjoys playing fantasy football and baseball, and loves the Red Sox and the Packers.


A general knowledge of biblical theology terms and language is benefical in this course. This list of biblical and theological terms may be used as a resource as you go through this course.

The instructional materials required for this course are included in enrollment. The primary instructional materials are the following books by Dr. Heiser:

  • Angels: What the Bible Really Says About God’s Heavenly Host

This course is facilitated through the learning management system Brightspace. When you enroll in this course, you will either checkout as an existing student and sign into your Brightspace account, or as a new student and create a new account. It is important you make note of your username and password. Review the Brightspace Platform Requirements as well as check your system capability.

The pre-recorded lectures are hosted in Vimeo and are embedded in each module. A Vimeo account is not required to watch the lectures. Review the System Requirements for Viewing, Browsing, and Apps.

To successfully complete this course, you must take all 15 quizzes within the course/semester start and end dates. There is no minimum grade requirements to pass a quiz and you have unlimited attempts. Once you successfully complete the course, you are awarded a Course Completion Badge, which is issued within 14 business days after the course/semester ends.

You do not receive a grade for this course. The focus is on learning and mastering the concepts.
